Travel Disruptions Ahead in March: Strikes to Impact Italian Transportation Networks

Italy will experience significant travel disruptions throughout March as multiple sectors prepare for strike action. Transportation services including air travel, railways, and local public transport will face interruptions due to planned labor protests.

A nationwide general strike is scheduled for March 8, organised by the SLAI-COBAS, CUB, and USI-CIT trade unions. This industrial action will affect various sectors including education, healthcare, public administration, manufacturing, and transportation.

Air travellers should prepare for flight cancellations and delays throughout the entire day on March 8. The railway sector will also be severely impacted, with service disruptions beginning at 9pm on March 7 and continuing until 9pm on March 8.

Authorities have indicated that additional details regarding specific service cancellations and alternate transportation options will be announced as the strike dates approach. Travellers planning to visit or travel within Italy in early March are advised to monitor the situation closely and make alternative arrangements where possible.

Airport Travel Strike

On March 16, baggage handlers at airports across Italy will go on a 24-hour strike, organised by the FLAI trade union. At the same time, workers from Techno Sky, a company that manages air traffic control systems, will hold a separate four-hour strike from midday to 4pm. This strike could lead to disruptions in airport operations, including check-in and baggage handling, as well as potential flight delays. Disruption may occur further afield than Italy as air traffic management could impede flights routing through Italian airspace.

Travellers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra time for flights or prepare for cancellations. Contact your airline for up-to-date advice and check your route before travel.
